Southeast Asian Humanitarian Organization Calls for Peace and Dialogue for Myanmar
The world is paying attention to Myanmar. The military took power and detained the Myanmar president and figures from the National League for Democracy (NLD) in early February.
The people of Myanmar take to the streets to reject the takeover of power and carry out social disobedience (civil disobedience movement). Several fatalities have fallen.
In response to this, humanitarian institutions in Southeast Asia that are members of the Southeast Asia Humanitarian Committee (SEAHUM) call on all parties in Myanmar to continue to uphold the values of humanity, dialogue and peace.
“Humanitarian organizations that are members of SEAHUM have built many schools and markets and carried out social activities in Myanmar,” said Kamarul Zaman, President of SEAHUM.
Vice President of SEAHUM, Murni Alit Baginda said, “SEAHUM wanted to encourage all parties in Myanmar to protect the democratization process based on the Myanmar constitution”.
“In addition, we ask all parties to ensure the safety and welfare of the people and humanitarian volunteers, both local and foreign residents,” said Murni.
This was conveyed by SEAHUM in its press conference regarding the joint statement of Southeast Asian humanitarian institutions. Therefore, SEAHUM:
- Encourages all parties in Myanmar to protect Myanmar’s constitution’s democratization process.
- Urges all parties in Myanmar to ensure the safety and well-being of the people (both local and foreign nationals) amidst the military and political tension in Myanmar.
- Urges all parties in Myanmar to ensure that people still have access to education, basic needs, and access to health care in this Covid19 pandemic era regardless of ethnicity and religion.
- Calls upon all parties in Myanmar to ensure aid workers and humanitarian agencies’ access to humanitarian support for the people in need in Myanmar during this political turbulence.
- SEAHUM members urge their respective governments to take a diplomatic approach to all parties in Myanmar to have a peaceful dialog and find a solution, and to stop the violence and atrocities during this political turbulence with all possible means and at all times.
